Designed by the esteemed architect Francisco Aires Mateus, the Hotel Caminhos de Santiago project set out to combine two types of architectural intervention: the recovery and restoration of the former ‘Pousada de Santiago’ (the second oldest in Portugal) and the construction of a contemporary building.
The architectural plan for the interior design and decoration was developed by two well-known architects, Cristina Santos Silva and Ana Menezes Cardoso. Besides the integration of the new building with the former ‘pousada’, the project also incorporated the characteristics of the Alentejo coast. The interior decorative details emphasise local culture and crafts by mixing them with contemporary furniture and lighting design, thus creating a homely and original atmosphere. In order to keep tradition alive, the hotel used local craftspeople. The ceramics, Alentejo rugs and objects made of cork are some of the features in the hotel’s various areas that offer visitors a unique experience of escape, tranquillity and sophistication. |
